Conductive Hearing Loss

Conductive hearing loss occurs when sounds are unable to pass into the inner ear. This is usually due to a blockage of earwax, infection, injury or a foreign object (common in children) in the outer or middle ear. The result of this type of hearing loss is that sounds become quieter, although not usually distorted. Changes in pressure in the environment can also lead to a temporary conductive hearing loss because of different pressures in the external and middle ear. Genetics can also lead to conductive hearing loss caused by otosclerosis – an inherited condition that results in abnormal bone growth near the middle ear. Depending on its cause, this type of hearing loss is often temporary. Treatments such as Microsuction is an effective wax removal process.

Sensorineural Hearing Loss

Sensorineural hearing loss can be a result of ageing, exposure to loud noise, injury, disease or an inherited condition. This type of hearing loss is sometimes referred to as sensory, cochlear, neural or inner ear hearing loss. It occurs when the inner ear or the actual hearing nerve itself becomes damaged. Sensorineural hearing loss not only changes the ability to hear quiet sounds, but it also reduces the quality of the sound that is heard. This means that individuals with this type of hearing loss will often struggle to understand speech. Whilst this type of hearing loss is generally permanent and not medically or surgically treatable, many people find that hearing aids can improve hearing and quality of life.
