Microsuction is considered the gold standard treatment for ear wax removal. It is the safest and most comfortable way to remove excessive or compacted ear wax and relieve you of your irritable symptoms.

Excessive or impacted ear wax can cause discomfort and hearing loss. It can also interfere with the normal operation of hearing aids. Traditional methods of removal, such as syringing, may be effective but carry some inconveniences.
We use a method called Microsuction ear wax removal. The ear wax and the ear canal remain in clear vision for the practitioner throughout the procedure and this improves efficiency of the clearance and significantly reduces risk. Most Microsuction treatments are 100% successful at the first time of asking with minimal oil installation required beforehand.
Did you know?
Microsuction ear wax removal is the method of ear wax and foreign body removal used by the majority of Ear, Nose and Throat Outpatient Clinics and is often referred to as a ‘gold standard’ treatment method. Otec Hearing can offer this service in the comfort of your own home.
Earwax (proper name Cerumen) consists of shed skin cells, hair, and the secretions of the ceruminous and sebaceous glands of the outside ear canal. It is actually a very useful substance that helps to keep our ears healthy, although it can cause some issues.
Earwax coats the skin lining of the ear canal and carries dirt, hair, dead cells and other debris out of the canal. The wax also helps to protect the eardrum from injury. The eardrum lies at the end of the ear canal and plays an important role in our ability to hear.
Normally earwax does its job invisibly and very well. Sometimes however, the ear makes too much wax. If the wax becomes trapped inside the ear canal, it may form a plug known as an impaction. Excess wax can press against the eardrum blocking the outside ear canal or hearing aids, potentially causing hearing loss. This is more specifically called conductive hearing loss.
An impaction can be painful and often interferes with hearing. Fortunately, there are several ways to remove trapped earwax. We offer a simple, easy and cost-effective wax removal service.

Microsuction Ear Wax Removal / FAQs
Ear wax is a completely natural by-product of your ears which acts as a protective barrier to trap dust and debris entering the ear canal and has antibacterial properties to help prevent ear infections.
Excessive ear wax production is very common amongst all age groups and in most cases is due to the glands lining the ear canal to be secreting excessive ear wax, the anatomy/shape and size of the ear canal can also play a big role in ear wax production such as narrow or curved ear canals. Certain types of diets or medications can also play a role in the excessive production of ear wax.
Like many of us today, we like to use insert earphones or headphones to listen to music which ultimately has an impact on the natural movement of ear wax inside your ear canal and can cause a blockage.
Other home remedies such as self-cleaning with a cotton bud/ear candling or tools that are for sale on the internet can do more harm than good. Therefore, it is always advisable to have your ear canals inspected and treated by a GP or qualified Audiologist.
The sensation of an excessively blocked ear can be extremely irritating and painful, and, in most cases, people like to have their symptoms cleared as soon as possible. This is where we can help, Otec Hearing is able to offer you same-day appointments subject to availability, without a need for a GP referral you can book your appointment online or call our clinics to find out our availability for an appointment.
At Otec Hearing when you attend your Microsuction appointment we will first ask you some medical history questions regarding your ear health and the problems you are facing with your ears and hearing. After this, we will use a video otoscope to obtain an image of the inside of your ear canals which is presented on a large screen in our clinic. Once we have determined if it is only one or both ears which need treatment, we will begin the procedure.
A fine suction probe is inserted into the ear canal which will gently and safely remove the ear wax, this method is completely safe and clean with no mess as there is no water involved, unlike the traditional ear syringing or irrigation. The Audiologist will be using a high-power microscope to look inside your ear canal whilst using the suction probe to remove the excessive ear wax. As there is no pain and discomfort the feedback, we get from all our clients is that they prefer this method over ear syringing. The full appointment will last roughly 30 mins after which you can carry on with your day.
Ear wax is a natural by-product secreted from the glands inside your ear canal, it is healthy to have some natural ear wax inside your ears, however excess wax can cause many problems.
Yes, your ears have natural properties to help with the removal of ear wax. Fine hairs in your ear canal and the lubrication from ear wax secretion helps with the outward movement of ear wax.
Cotton buds and any at-home self-cleaning devices are highly discouraged and can cause more harm than good. Using cotton buds will push the wax onto the eardrum which can cause perforations, hearing loss, and tinnitus which may require Microsuction to relieve you of your symptoms.
In some cases, olive oil drops can help with the flow and movement of ear wax however it may also have the opposite effect. The most effective way for olive oil treatment is to have your ears inspected by our Audiologist or your GP prior to starting any treatment.
Microsuction is considered the gold standard treatment for ear wax removal. It is the safest and most comfortable way to remove excessive or compacted ear wax and relieve you of your irritable symptoms.
Some (but not all) GP Practices can help to remove earwax, however, this is not always done by Microsuction. Ear irrigation is still a traditional method of wax removal used, which is a less effective method of removing wax from the ear.
Microsuction ear wax removal starts from £50, which can be done in either of our clinics or as a home visit.
Microsuction treatment can be done either at one of our clinics in Lincolnshire or Huddersfield, or in the comfort of your own home.
